My favorite thing about this painting is the pattern of sun and shade on Mae’s skin; she’s the daughter of my neice and nephew, and I’ve painted her many times. Rosy, warm skin tones against the cool blues and greens of water – a combination I never tire of.
Her squint as she looks into the sun at her aunt, who is admiring Mae’s sandcastle while taking the photo, seems just magical to me. I painted the four beachgoers wading in the surf behind Mae with much less detail, so they would fade into the background…that was hard. This one is my favorite new painting!
